Travel Tips Guide for Little Corn Island

Is traveling to Little Corn safe?

As it has for many years, travel to the Corn Islands remains safe and unaffected by the political situation of 2018 that occurred in outer areas of Managua and other isolated areas of the mainland. Since things settled back down there more than one year ago, the traveler advisories that some countries posted have also dropped back down to the level they were when tourism was thriving over the past 15 years, and more continue to be favorably updated. Tourism is slowly returning to normal, and getting here is the same and as safe as ever. If you have always wanted to visit an unspoiled tropical paradise with great amenities but without the crowds, this is your chance!

How do I get there?

We have made your travel to the island as easy as possible by including your roundtrip domestic flights from Managua (MGA) to Corn Island (CIS) as well as the ferry to the hotel on Little Corn. Below is the schedule you should plan your international flights around.

Arrivals into Corn Island from Managua :

There are only two flights per day from Managua (MGA) to Corn Island (CIS) leaving at 6.30am and at 2pm. You may take either flight that works best for you. Please plan to arrive into Managua Airport with at least 2 hours of time to get off your international flight, get through customs, get your bags and then check in for your departure flight with Costeña Airlines to the island. This means being in MGA by 5am or 12:30pm on the first day of the retreat to catch this flight.

Please plan to either arrive the night before the retreat starts into Managua and spend the night on your own to take the morning flight out or arrive into Managua the morning the retreat starts to take the afternoon flight to Corn Island. We recommend the afternoon flight if possible as it allows you to arrive to the hotel and be checked straight into your room but if necessary there is a beach bar and lounge chairs and hammocks all around the property so please choose the international flights that work best for you.

Ferry service from Corn Island Airport to the hotel on Little Corn is also included. Your driver will be waiting for you upon landing into Corn Island to take you to the boat that heads directly to the hotel. It’s an easy 20 minute ride on the boat.

Departures out of Corn Island to Managua :

Return flights out of Little Corn to Managua leave twice per day as the schedule below.

Remember that you will need to allow approximately 2 hours between arrival into MGA and your international departure to get checked into your flight, get through customs and security, pick up any last minute goodies, and to your gate. This means that your international flight should be leaving Managua from around 11am or later for the morning flight and around 7pm for the afternoon flight. Remember you can always stay an extra night in Managua if need be.

PLEASE NOTE : If you miss the flight or ferry that is included in your package on opening and closing days of the retreat, you will be required to purchase another flight and ferry package on your own directly with the hotel and the airline. We offer these included flights and ferries only on the opening and closing days of the retreat. If you wish to explore the islands more please communicate that to us and we will see what we can do in terms of extending your flights. We highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance in the event of unforeseen travel hiccups.

A current passport is required for travel to Nicaragua. It should have at least 6 months of validity from your departure date. No visas are required to enter the country if your passport is from any of the following : USA, Europe, Australia, Canada. Any other nationalities please contact your embassy.

What’s the history with the Corn Islands?

Nicaragua’s Corn Islands are much more than a beautiful paradise. The Corn Islands have a colorful and varied history dating back long before Nicaragua’s pirate days in the 1600’s. According to the 400-year-old tome The Buccaneers of America by the Dutch pirate Alexander Olivier Esquemeling, the author claims to be one of the first to “discover” Big and Little Corn Island. Initially occupied the by the Kutra Indians, the native bare-footed, copper-colored inhabitants were wiped out by the Miskito Indian warriors and from slave trading to the colonists along the coast. The next wave of Corn Island settlement began about 1700 by British bringing their slaves from Jamaica. On the 27th of August, 1841, Colonel Alexander McDonald, superintendent of what was then British Honduras (known as Belize today), landed his warship in the Southwest Bay harbor. He rounded up all of the slave owners and proclaimed that all of the slaves on the islands where thereby free men.

Now part of Nicaragua, these amazing islands has become Nicaragua’s best kept secret. Today Little Corn is a wonderful mix of Afro-Caribbean culture. You will find a rainbow of skin and eye colors on the locals, big smiles, and a charming creole accent. While the official language of Nicaragua is Spanish, Nicaraguans on the islands and the Caribbean coast speak indigenous languages as well as English, which is widely used.

What about the food and drink?

The Corn Islands diet consists of traditional stews like rondon and freshly made coconut bread. They eat lots of tropical fruits and root vegetables as well as fresh fish and seafood caught just off-shore.

While several dinners are included at our hotel together, there are several great options for the meals you have on your own around the island. We typically find that the group ends up going out all together or in smaller groups so you’ll easily find someone to dine with if you’re up for the adventure. Keep in mind that you can also choose to stay at the hotel and enjoy a quiet dinner and call it an early night anytime.

If you’re looking for the action, definitely plan to venture out to the ever popular Tranquilo Cafe for a meal and/or drinks and some live local music. They have bonfires a few times per week as well but watch out for the local monkey that tries to steal your fries!

Try Lickie Island Ice Cream‘s Choco-peanut butter, check out the sunset and amazing food at The Sunset Shack too! Here is a full list of more local food and drink options. All the cuisine on the island is fresh, local and delicious. You’re in for a real treat!
