About

Yoga & Mexican Cuisine, two of our favorites!

Come and be among the FIRST to experience our newest Retreat experience in Tulum, a Yoga and Mexican Cuisine Exploration! We are ecstatic to bring together this amazing itinerary for our very first Yoga & Cuisine Retreat in Tulum!

Learn the Mexican approach to cooking and flavors from Lina Avila, a chef from Oaxaca, Mexico and join us on a journey of the senses through culinary demonstrations, spiced up dinner menus, and a fruit-forward Cocktail/Mocktail lesson. Additionally, we will have the opportunity to dine at Tulum’s best restaurants, including Food and Wine favorite, Hartwood Restaurant on the Beach Road.

To maintain balance, daily strengthening and meditative yoga practices taught by our own local Mexican instructor, for all levels are paired with homemade local food and drink while enjoying the Caribbean and nature excursions here in the Yucatan paradise. You will deepen your culinary expertise as well as your yoga practice in our outdoor yoga studio at Zamas Hotel on the Beach Road.

In addition, this inaugural foodie retreat will include a local street food tour through the town of Tulum, cooking classes with Lina featuring authentic Mexican cuisine, secret beach picnic lunch, introduction to Mezcal tasting and happy hour cooking demos. Plus you’ll take home a special cookware keepsake for your own kitchen.

Meet the Chef : Lina Avila

Lina grew up in Oaxaca, Mexico, one of the richest places in the country for culture and gastronomy. From a young age, she was in the kitchen with her family and friends cooking, tasting, creating, and sharing authentic Mexican recipes and techniques passed down for generations in her family and community.

She moved to Tulum 24 years ago, where she worked to develop restaurant menus and standards with some of the best-known hotels in the area like the Colibri Boutique Hotel’s La Zebra and beyond, creating some of the best restaurants on the beach to this day because of her continued consulting and guidance. Over the years, she has delighted and made happy many palates from all over the world with her authentic, delicious, and sophisticated Mexican cuisine.

Her cooking and personality make for a great time in the kitchen. Her passion, joy and constant desire to share the delights of true Mexican food with others has led her to open her own kitchen and cooking school right here in Tulum. Co-led with her sister, Miriam, they share mini-Corona’s with you in the kitchen, hand-making tortillas, telling funny jokes, and creating a delicious menu to enjoy together at the table just like back home in Oaxaca.

We are thrilled about this culinary adventure and yoga retreat, a truly unique experience. Due to the intimate nature of the cooking classes space is limited, yogis and foodies are encouraged to reserve your spot now.

Stay

ACCOMMODATIONS

Enjoy our own private villa right on the beach road in Tulum on the property of Zamas Hotel. Ocean across the street, steps from all of Tulum’s hottest attractions, and miles of beach to walk. Plus we have our own private pool and beautiful yoga space. The house has 5 bedrooms, 3 shared indoor bathrooms and a pool bathroom, dining area to enjoy breakfast, restaurant across the street, and an ample yoga space for outdoor practice.

Each room is unique with different views and features.  Room #1 offers a king bed on the first level with a mezzanine holding two twin beds on the second floor as seen below. There is a bathroom on the king bedroom level. Room #2 is a lofted area above the dining area featuring another two twin beds. Bathrooms for second level are shared either downstairs or upstairs.

Rooms #3 & #5 offer ocean views from the top floor of the house. One room has a queen bed and the other has a king. There is plenty of closet space, a secret walkway outside for ocean views, and two bathrooms in the hallway to share amongst the three rooms upstairs.

Room #4 is also on the third floor.  It has a king bed and jungle views.

Tulum is an ecological zone which means rustic luxury. We have electricity and solar powered internet 24 hours per day. Sheets and towels are changed only when necessary to conserve our precious natural resources and we offer ocean breezes instead of air conditioning. Most of the year the weather is very comfortable and you are lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves just steps from your bed.  We heat our own water for showers and tread lightly on the land that hosts us all.

Video

A special thanks to Modern Maya Media for this creation of our current Yoga + Spa retreat offerings in Tulum.

This amazing video was made by Lobo Viejo Films for us when we had our own little gem on the beach in Tulum called Utopia from 2012 until 2016. It was a unique, sacred place that was taken from us by a corrupt Mexican government way too soon but we will always hold it near and dear to our hearts. For those of you that got to experience this retreat center you are fortunate.

We duplicate the experience of our Yoga + Spa retreats in our new home at Zamas in our stunning, private villa Casa Vallejo which has MUCH more amenities than Utopia so for THAT our new and returning guests are fortunate 😉

“The best time in paradise! I had the best time on retreat in Tulum! It exceeded my expectations – everything from the location + accommodations, the yoga with Andrea and the food were exceptional. I traveled alone and loved how the days were thoughtfully planned but gave us lots of free time to explore. Christina and Sofi were awesome to communicate with and made Tulum feel like home. I’d come back in a heartbeat!”

–Shelby L. Vancouver, BC CAN

“Best thing I have done for myself! I loved the time I spent at Zamas with Yoga & Adventures Worldwide. Christina, Sofi and Nina were very welcoming and made it a safe space to be in for 5 days. I traveled solo and was slightly nervous and was welcomed by their friendly faces and immediately felt comfortable. The Zamas hotel was also great and the house was clean and in a central location. The town of Tulum has many great restaurants and shops close by. The retreat schedule was perfect allowing time for 2 yoga classes a day and plenty of free time to do other activities. I highly recommend a retreat with Yoga Adventures Worldwide and hope to try another retreat location in the future!”

–Tiffany Z. Pittsburg, PA USA

“A bucket-list must! My yoga retreat in Tulum was incredible. Such an enlightening fun & soulful experience that its going back on my bucket list. The group of woman running it, from the yoga teachers, Pepper and Nina to the coordinators/admins, Sophi to the owner, Christina are beautiful people who helped make the experience as awesome as it was. Pepper Monroe was our Yoga instructor- a special gift for us as she is such a bright light, sweet skilled and fun! The excursions were wild and intense (in a good way) , well organized, the food was very yummy and the practice & schedule was prefect. Compared to other retreats this was affordable. Highly recommend this yoga retreat, no matter what destination!”

–Katie B., Vancouver, BC CAN

“Paradise Found!! The trip with Yoga Adventures Worldwide to Tulum was phenomenal, I highly recommend it. I didn’t know what to expect and the trip surpassed everything I could have dreamed of. It may have actually been the best vacation I’ve ever had. Christina does an amazing job putting this retreat together and she is also an awesome person to have around. Sofi paid attention to all the details with so much care, was always available to help with everything, and also made things fun. Nina, the leader of yoga and meditation, was fantastic with a great sense of humor, and a key leader in getting us into the groove of relaxation, meditation, and bliss. I am so grateful that I found this retreat on a whim, it’s the luckiest thing that has ever happened to me.”

–Emily C., London, England UK

Extremely pleased with this Retreat! Accommodations were excellent (and beds were top of the line, extremely comfortable),Yoga instructor was excellent (very knowledgeable in her field, and very sweet and accommodating to all), Staff was excellent (whatever we asked for assistance with, they helped us and were very kind and hospitable), Meals at Zamas were excellent (great menu, fresh, authentic & tasty), location was excellent (we were at a quiet spot along the Beach Road, but had easy & close access to excellent beaches that were not over packed), R&R time was perfect (there was adequate time to peruse the area, visit cenotes & ruins, explore the beaches, restaurants & shops)! Super pleased with all aspects of our trip!”

–Karen B., San Francisco, CA USA

We loved it! My wife and I joined the retreat in January 2017. It was just the right mix of yoga, downtime, and excursions. We also got a chance to try many things for the first time, including stand up paddle board, a sweat lodge and breathing exercises. The food was great, yoga instruction incredible, and Tulum is just a really amazing place. Can’t recommend this highly enough!”

–Anna B., Denver, CO USA
