Teaching Contemporary Yoga Advanced Training

This 6 night course will evaluate the practice and teaching (pedagogy) of Yoga for advanced practitioners and teachers. It is a deep dive into Yoga intended for those who are looking to continue a serious inquiry, conversation, and collaboration about teaching and practicing yoga and a consideration of how to make its future evolution most effective.

This is a “training for the trainer” and is optimal for those that wish to create exceptional and innovative teacher trainings or reinvigorate their own teaching.

This 6 night course is a profound investigation of Yoga intended for experienced teachers who are looking to continue serious inquiry, conversation, and collaboration about teaching and practicing yoga. It aims to encourage exploration for teachers as they fashion their place in the continuing evolution of yoga as a serious endeavor.

Edward and Laurie will utilize their new book Teaching Contemporary Yoga (Routledge 2022) to frame and lead discussion and experimentation. They will cultivate independent critical thinking and imaginative solutions to the problems facing teachers and the possibilities for yoga practice in the world today.

Sustained interest in one’s own teaching can be a challenge since the daily demands leave little room for professional enrichment. This training provides practical solutions to overcoming disillusionment by helping identify a teacher’s unique philosophy and strengths, allowing them to reengage with their enthusiasm for teaching. It is a collaboration between professional teachers who wish to intelligently critique and experiment.

Relevant to any style, orthodoxy, or population, this “incubator” goes beyond instruction in postures or adjustments. It discusses how good teaching requires sound theories, methods, techniques, and practice. It examines how to use experience, creativity, and insight instead of teaching in a formulaic way.

Day #1 : Arrival & settle
Day #2 : The Aesthetics of Beauty and Connoisseurs of Consciousness
Day #3 : Making Ritual and Meaning Making
Day #4 : Why Thinking Matters: Radical versus Critical Acceptance

Day #7 : Departure

EDWARD CLARK, Master Yoga Teacher

Edward Clark is a figure acknowledged throughout the world for his work integrating the fields of theatre and yoga. His performing company, Tripsichore, tours regularly throughout Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Edward is also internationally recognised as a teacher of advanced yoga technique and philosophy whose teachings are sought around the globe. He was a regular presenter and workshop leader at Yoga Journal Conferences and continues to be a sought-after teacher on various Teacher Training Programs in the USA, the UK, Europe, Mexico and throughout Asia.

Edward says,”The concept of vinyasa as applied to yoga philosophy could either be considered very ancient or radically new. In either case, vinyasa seems to be one of the great contributions to yoga of this particular generation of yogis. VINYASA in our definition, is the evenly metered flow of movement, breath and thought resulting in a smooth, uninflected state of being. The vinyasa techniques are pursued to bring about clarity and stability to one’s thoughts and actions. Tripsichore endeavours to do this in class and onstage.  Most yoga discipline has worked on refining one’s self in the direction of greater stillness – an absence of movement in the mind and body. Superficially, vinyasa would seem to contradict this. However, the mental focus and physical technique needed to bring about continuous fluid movement can also bring one to a “seat” of great stability and clarity. The stability is not only in the posture, but in the transition between postures – to the point where there is no distinction between movement and stillness.”

laurie greene, PhD, E-RYT, YBR

Dr. Laurie Greene, PhD, ERYT500 has been a yoga teacher, studio owner, and teacher trainer for over 40 years. A PhD in anthropology, Laurie has practiced yoga since age 15, having grown up in a “yoga family”.  Since then, yoga has become her healthy addiction. Always an enthusiastic student, Laurie combines her training in a variety of classical “hatha” traditions and other movement traditions, bringing insights and techniques from all these to her eclectic teaching and practice.  As the owner of Yoga Nine Studios, Laurie has not only offered classes, but a venue where master teachers from around the world gather to offer workshops and trainings.

Laurie has been training teachers since 1992 and began offering advanced trainings with Edward Clark of Tripsichore Yoga in 2008. She approaches advanced training as graduate level education; meant to develop one’s intellectual curiosity with an acknowledgement of the intelligence of each (prospective) teacher and the value of their accumulated experience. Her trainings emphasize the importance of understanding one’s strengths in teaching and the development of each teacher’s unique style.

Travel Tips

Travel Tips to El Cuyo, Yucatan

Fly into Cancun International airport (CUN). Please note that Cancun is in the state of Quintana Roo and El Cuyo is in the state of Yucatan. There is a time difference of 1 hour in the winter months for WINTER DAYLIGHT SAVINGS. Please make sure to double check the time zones well as you plan your travel.

From Cancun Airport to El Cuyo, travel time is approximately 2.5 hours door to door. Our drivers are very safe and reliable and we can arrange transfers from the airport to our beach house if you like. Please send along your full flight details and we will try to pair you with others traveling on a similar schedule to and from the retreat. Pricing depends on how many are in the ride.

Taxis are not allowed to wait outside the Cancun International airport at arrivals so a transfer needs to be arranged for a private car service pick up in advance or there is a local bus that takes you to El Cuyo. For arriving on your own to El Cuyo by bus you’ll need to go from the airport in Cancun to the town of Cancun station and then from there to Colonia Yucatan and then from there, you’d grab a taxi to El Cuyo. To find out more details check out this site.

There are no ATMS in El Cuyo and everything is better paid in cash as most places do not accept credit cards. Please plan to take out cash in Mexican pesos at the airport ATM upon arrival, pre-order currency from your bank back home and bring it with you or exchange your currency at the airport for Mexican pesos. Some places accept credit cards but it’s always a better idea to have cash just in case. That said there is not a lot of shopping in El Cuyo as it is a quiet town with beach and chill. Cash tips for staff are appreciated

Wifi is not the most reliable and does come in and out at times along with the electricity though it is getting better. If it does go out it usually comes back fairly quickly and offers a nice chance to sit back and relax and watch the stars. If you need super reliable internet please let us know to discuss this further. The idea is to unplug and be offline as much as possible.

There are no specialized stores and although there are a few pharmacies in the town if a specific drug is required, you would have to travel by car to the city of Tizimín about an hour away so please plan on bringing everything you might think you will need with you from home.
